If you are traveling with children aged 5 and under you are required by Florida State law to have an approved resraint
device, children aged three and under must have a separate carrier fitted to the hire car, Please see "Collecting Your Car"
to the left.
Seatbelts like the UK must be worn by all front seat passengers.
Always keep to the speed limit, this is normally between 40 - 65 miles per hour, however some roads in buit up areas
or residential areas such as Vista Del Lago the speed limit can be as low as 15 - 20 miles per hour.
The police have the right, and will issue drivers on the spot fines if they are caught breaking these very strict speed
limits, these fines can be well over $250.00.
If you are caught speeding and are issued with an on the spot fine please do not make the simple mistake of leaving the
USA without paying any fine, your hire company will provide your home details to the police, the fine will then be re issued
with the extra costs added, points will then also be added to your licence and you may also be refused entry to the USA on
any future visit.
The law for drink driving in the USA is the same as that of the UK, If you are caught you will be banned and that ban
will be valid in the UK, DO NOT DO IT.
Whilst driving across road junctions you will notice that traffic signals are hung across the roads on wires and not
on posts at the side of the road, you will also notice the name of a road, this name is the name of the road you are crossing
not the name of the road you are on.
You will also notice that some traffic signals state "NO TURN ON RED", this is because if
you are at a red light and are you turning right, you have the right to proceed through the red light providing, of
course, that the road is clear, or as stated there are no signs that state "NO TURN ON RED"
Stop Signs
At a great many road junctions especially those on the Vista Del Lago complex you may see a red "STOP"
sign, it is essential that when you approch these signs you bring your car to a complete stop even if the road is clear.
The police do hide and monitor these signs on a regular basis, once again they can and will issue on the spot fines
if you fail to stop your car.
The general rule for the stop sign especially at a cross roads with 4 stop signs is that the first car to approach the
sign can proceed or turn in front of others cars, however please take care.
Many of Orlandos Highways such as the Beeline Expressway are known as "Toll Roads", every
few miles you will have to pay a "Toll" if you wish to continue to use the road, These tolls can
range from 50cents to $2.00 or more, A trip to Space Kennedy will cost aprox $7.50 in toll charges.
When using these roads DO NOT use the "EXPRESS"
booths found on the left hand side of the road, these are reserved for fast moving trucks who pay a fixed price per year,
they have an electronic pass sensor and do not have to stop at the booths. using these lanes without the electronic pass could
result in a serious accident.
Although the booths are normally manned and will accept dollar bills you will also notice that they also have a bucket
type money collecting machine, all you have to do is throw the correct change into the bucket and you will be given a green
light to proceed, please take note as you leave the toll area of 6 or seven booths the road will reduce back to three or four
lanes.
